«The Luncheon on the Grass» is an oil on canvas painting by Édouard Manet. Painted 1863 it measures 208 by 264.5 centimetres .
Whilst a nude in a classical setting was considered acceptable, one in a contemporary setting was not. Luncheon on the Grass caused a public scandal and was savaged by the critics.
